Three-volume set of The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling; by Henry Fielding; copyright 1771. Several years ago I found this description by searching ABEBOOKS.COM and it appears to be the same set as this one -
Edinburgh: Printed in the year MDCCLXXI (1771). 3 vols., small 8vo, xv, 271; viii, 343; vi, 300pp.Rare Scottish edition (first printed in London in 1749) of a landmark book of the 18th-century, in an attractive and readable format. ESTC notes 2 editions in 1771 printed in Edinburgh; both seem to be scarce. This edition only held by the National Library of Scotland. No copy seen online; no copy at auction.
Condition of this 3-vol set:
The set must have been owned by one Thomas Gould, as his name is inscribed on the front and back flyleaf of Vol 2 and the inside front flyleaf of Vol 3. Vol 1 is missing the flyleaf at front and back. Vol 3 is missing the back flyleaf.
All 3 vols have the original leather cover at front and back - although quite worn.
All 3 vols have all the pages intact (except flyleaf pages as mentioned above).
Vol 1 front and back covers are attached but just barely. There are some water stains on the inside back cover and on pages 247 to the final page.
Vol 2 page 185-186 appears to have a smudge of shoe polish (this is just my guess) but front and back covers are still tightly attached.
Vol 3 front cover is barely attached.
All 3 volumes have foxing on the pages and many dog-eared pages. Surprisingly, not a lot of torn pages (Sorry, I didn't count the number but all tears are small - no large page tears.
Please see pictures. I have lots more pictures and would be happy to send to you - just contact me.
